The Station Agent (2003) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama)
06 Feb, 2014 | Movies To See Before You Die / Drama

A film based on the lonely story of a man with dwarfism, may not sound interesting at all to many friends, due to its exceptional & unusual theme rarely attempted before. But the film’s remarkable achievement actually lies in this unique subject matter only, which rightly emphasizes more on the feel, emotions and the realistic truth depicted in its script, than on its basic storyline. Moreover the empathy shown by the writer-director in executing many inspiring sequences in the film is certainly worth applauding, looking at the world from a distinctive angle & vision, never tried before.

When Fin (a dwarf) inherits a station from his business partner, he decides to move to that remote area in search of some peace, away from all those pointing fingers and staring eyes of many insensitive fellow humans. Despite having no intentions of making any new friends, Fin discovers a fresh bonding there with Olivia and Joe, who are also struggling with their own set of life problems individually. The trio forms a kind of mutual admiration society in the deserted region and then go through a new phase of their life which is beautiful, moving and an enriching experience for the viewers, remaining far away of becoming depressed or too cheesy (as one might assume).

A highly original & charming work by writer-director Thomas McCarthy, this small film won great appreciation and awards in the international film festivals. And it can truly be called a wonderful, joyous venture pointing towards the real, inner character of a person which matters the most and not his or her outer physical appearance or stature. With a very pleasant script taking forward the novel thought with just three but highly likable characters, the film also has an intelligent humour, clever dialogues and a perfect vision too without any heavy or dull moments in its 90 minutes of duration. Further with the help of great performances by its lead actors namely Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale, THE STATION AGENT can easily be called a novel, refreshing experience of its own kind, not to be missed by the lovers of meaningful, realistic cinema for sure.

In other words, if you are the one who loves watching a detailed character study being portrayed on the screen dealing with a highly riveting & rare kind of subject matter tackled well, then THE STATION AGENT is the film which needs to be seen as a must. And once you find the courage to go for this off-beat, refreshing movie in the coming days, I am sure you will never regret the decision and would also recommend it further to the few like-minded friends in your own circle of real cinema lovers.
